Why Wait For Valentines Day

In trying to trace the origin of Valentines Day, I have stumbled on so many different stories, which makes it extremely difficult to figure out its real origin. But the bottom line is that it is certainly a pagan tradition. Linking with it to St. Valentine is also another debate. While some people try to link it to him (probably to make it acceptable in Christianity) others reject any connection. Whatever the case is, we are NOT allowed to imitate the kuffar in any way. Thereby making the celebration of Valentines Day impermissible in Islam.

Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala) says in the Qur'an that, "And if any among you takes them (as Awliyaa' [friends and helpers]), then surely, he is one of them." (Q5:51)

Allah also says, "You (O Muhammad) will not find any people who believe in Allaah and the Last Day, making friends with those who oppose Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad), even though they were their fathers or their sons or their brothers or their kindred (people)." (Q58:22)

It was reported that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said: "He who copies any people is one of them." - Sunan Abu-Dawud, Book 32, #4020 - Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar.

The above citations urge us to stay away from Valentines Day and all other forms of celebrations without Islamic basis. Always remember that Allah has mentioned in more places than one that, He is the most forgiving, the most merciful. Repent to Him today and He will be quick to accept your repentance.

It was reported that the Prophet (SAW) said, "The one who repents from a sin is like the one who did not sin." -Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah.
In another hadith, the Prophet (pbuh) tells us about the repentance of a slave due to a sin that he commits and his turning toward his Lord by likening it to the sorrow and sadness of a person who lives in the desert with his camel as follows: “A person is in a barren, empty and dangerous land. He has his camel with him. His food and drinks are on the camel. He falls asleep. When he wakes up, he cannot see his camel. He starts to look for it but he cannot find it. While he is in a terrible state due to hunger and thirst, he says to himself, ‘I will go to the place where I was and sleep there till I die.’ He goes there and puts his head on his arm and sleeps to die. He wakes up to see his camel standing nearby. His food and drinks are on the camel. Allah becomes happier than this man when His believing slave repents and asks for forgiveness.” - Muslim.

If you are one who has been celebrating this day, this year may be the time for you to stop! Islam     is not against your showing love as a couple but do it any other day except the day reserved for unislamic celebrations. You can give your spouse flowers, chocolates, bake heart shaped cake - but just not to aid the celebration of Valentines Day.

Hasten to stop this act of Jahiliyya and spread the word.

. . .In any case, why wait for valentines day to show that you care? If that person is really special, celebrate him/her everyday!!!
